Ramallah – Tuesday, May 20, 2025 – The Palestinian National Commission for Education, Culture and Science has called for applications for the inaugural UNESCO-Uzbekistan Biruni Prize for Research on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan in 2025.

The Commission explained that this prize was established to encourage the ethical development and use of artificial intelligence and to promote scientific endeavors and cooperation in this field. The UNESCO-Uzbekistan Biruni Prize honors the distinguished intellectual legacy of Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, a pioneering scholar whose work in mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and scientific research laid the foundations for interdisciplinary knowledge and intercultural dialogue.

The Commission noted that the prize is awarded biennially to three winners – individuals, institutions, or organizations – whose research, policy contributions, or innovations have significantly contributed to the development of the ethics of artificial intelligence or its practical application.

Each winner receives a cash prize of US$30,000, a Peroni Medal, and a certificate. The prize is funded by the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

UNESCO invites nominations for this year to be submitted by June 30, 2025, in English or French. Those wishing to participate are encouraged to contact the Palestinian National Commission and submit their applications no later than one week before the deadline to allow us sufficient time to process the necessary paperwork.
